Girl's Day and Go Pros

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our EIGHTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "G".

March 3rd is Girl's Day in Japan

Girl's Day is March 3rd in Japan. It is also known as the Japanese Doll Festival. When I was growing up on Molokai, most of my friends were Japanese. Some of them had one or two dolls (elaborate ones that were kept in a glass case) that their parents or some other relative gave to them in celebration of Girl's Day. These dolls usually were displayed in the family living room.  They were not like the 'everyday' dolls that we  played with.

And, really, that is the extent of my personal memory of Girl's Day in that each year, the dolls would come out for display. There is also a Boy's Day which is may 5th. Lots of kite flying goes on then.

The dolls you see pictured here, I suspect, are from the court that is seen in the elaborate doll displays in Japan (visit the link I provided as it goes into detail about this practice). Except, these dolls were in an antique store in Corrales. There is quite an array of Japanese (antique) dolls for sale in that store.  Pretty fascinating-that there would be a collection of these Japanese dolls in a small village in New Mexico!

"G" is also for "Go Pro" which is a special video camera that my husband and his ski team like to film with. It films in 180 degrees-no viewfinder, so you feel like you are shooting 'blind'.  There are a lot of accessories that you can buy for this camera-such as specialty suction cups that allows these to be strapped onto a ski helmet, a jet ski, a pair of skis, the front of your chest, etc. In fact, our friend, Dan, strapped them onto his skis and skied around all day so that you could enjoy that unique perspective! By the way, these cameras shoot in high definition (HD). Here's his video:









If you go to You Tube and type in, "Twin Tip Nation", a lot of the videos are shot using the Go Pro cameras. Nearly all of the most recent one they did at Durango (aka Purgatory) this past February was done on Go Pros.
