Stepping Down

Steps leading down to the beach on the south shore of Molokai-sure beats having to negotiate the embankment! The water is shallow for quite a ways out before encountering the fringe reef. Molokai's reef is unique among the other islands because it has a 30 mile "fringing reef." This means that the reef crest is a half mile to a mile offshore and the unspoiled reef is just beyond that point. Just some trivial information for your memory banks to store!

Bonsai!

A bonsai plant I potted in preparation for the Molokai Arts Center Plant and Pot Sale on Dec. 9th. Members are asked to take home empty pottery pots made specifically for this fundraiser and plant something in it to be sold at the sale. It just so happened that I had a 'volunteer' bonsai tree (yes, it really was a volunteer and I've no idea how old it is). I saw this little 2" pot and thought it would be perfect for this miniature tree. It's an Octopus tree and I know-you're wondering why it's called that when it only has 5 leaves! Well, the flowers are long stems that resemble octopus tentacles. Hence, the name.

A Pistil Shadow

The 'anatomy' of a hibiscus flower brings back a childhood memory. These flowers are, of course, everywhere here in Hawaii and certainly in our yard. The memory is one of my older brother, Robert telling me what all the parts of the hibiscus flower were. He had pulled a flower off of a plant and took it apart to tell me what each part was. He still does things like this today, but now they are of more complex subjects and I just have to look at him and laugh and remind him that I will not, on any certain terms, remember any of what he is trying to teach me!

The pistils of the flowers always make for nice shadows, don't you think?

Afternoon DeLight

What is it about the late afternoon light in the fall? It seems to be even better than any other time of year. Quite magical, glowing, soft, warm, sensual-all rolled up in one! Well, it does captivate me each afternoon during that fleeting magical moment before the sun starts to dip down over the horizon-letting you know that you better look quickly before it's gone and dark settles in.

Coming in for a landing

Living on an island means that you find yourself flying a lot more to get from point 'A' to point 'B'. I went to Maui last weekend to visit my son. Took this shot as we were touching down at the Molokai airport. We've had lots of rain recently, so everything is super green-making for a nice contrast to the plane's shadow.

The Wisdom of the Ancients

An ancient opihi shell (limpet shell) sitting atop the sea cliffs of Mokio Preserve. Basking in the last light of the day-that bewitching, golden hour (which is more like a few fleeting moments). If you are ever on Molokai between the months of Feb-Apr, be sure to sign up for a tour. The work being done there to restore the land to what it was is astounding.

A Bright Star Amongst the Shadows

Amongst the shadows of the forest floor, a beauty arises.

You don't have to be big to be bright or noticed. Or flashy. This little mushroom is smaller than a dime on the forest floor amongst so many branches and leaves. However, Mother Nature did decide that being a different color from what's around it would make it stand out. How can something so small and delicate be so beautiful, I wonder? And, it only appears after the rains. I wish I knew more about these delicate little things. Mushrooms are in the fungus family, that I know. And that mushrooms contain no chlorophyll and most are considered saprophytes-in other words, they obtain their nutrition from metabolizing non living organic matter.

I just think they are a marvelous work of art!

Subtle, But Sweet

A fleeting moment at your feet-as you walk past it. Did you see it? The light hitting it just right casting a shadow with sharp edges, yet belying of a delicate image. It's so easy to be pre-occupied and thinking about the task at hand to overlook something that warrants appreciation. Such as this. I almost missed it. So glad I didn't!

Celebrating the Mundane

Simple lines, shape, color. And light that is just right.

Celebrating the mundane and perhaps elevating it a bit.

Ironwood Trees

So much of what grows here in Hawaii are non-native plants-in other words, not indigenous. It's a double-edged sword. The plus side is that anything and everything grows here. The downside is that anything and everything grows here. One of the non-native trees are the ironwood tree. It grows very well here and the wood is very hard-I think so hard that you don't see woodworkers making things from it.

I mention this tree since the shadow that you are looking at is a branch of the ironwood tree. I will say that it did catch my eye on one of my morning walks. It was as though the tree used the rock as a substrate on which to cast its lacy shadow. Rock art? LOL.

Aloha Week Festival 2017

This week here in Hawaii, on each of the island's is a week long festival called Aloha Week. This evening was the community gathering and celebration of Aloha Week with food, music, hula dancing with a royal court presiding over it all. Very much so a rich cultural celebration-while preserving some of the island's unique traditions.

The Sum of the Parts

I know I see things that others don't readily see. And I often capture what I see without giving context as to what the whole actually is. In this case, I remembered to. Shadows cast from my water bottle placed on my notebook that was covered by a 'book cover' that I had made.

So, in this instance, I actually provided you with the whole that goes with the parts. I hope that it gives you a glimpse of how easily it is to see abstractions in ordinary things. A shift in perspective, if you may.

OMG-where did September go to? Happy fall everyone! My favorite time of the year.

Dragon on a Tree Limb

You see it, don't you? A dragon perched on a tree limb? Well, that's what I see! I don't know if that is what the design is really intended to be of. All I know is, that it is lovely!

I also see a kind of octopus thing but he doesn't have all of his eight limbs. Oh, then there's the barking dog...

Let your imagination run free!

Seaside Sunset Dinners Molokai Style

One of the things that my husband and I promised each that we would do when we moved here to Molokai was to make sure we made it down to the beach often enough to enjoy the sunset. And, that's just what we did yesterday. We (OK, I) packed up a light picnic dinner and some drinks and drove over to the west end of the island (which is about 17 miles from our door) and there we are-at a beautiful beach. We were almost the only ones there. A few others were there, but very much so on the other side of the beach which was about 1/4 mile away. The sunsets this week have been intense with deep colors-most likely from the vog that we've had this week. You can learn more about vog here. I've posted a lot of these sunset images on my Facebook page, so if you're a Face-booker, drop by to see the spectacular colors.

Alien Egg

Alright, alright, so it really isn't an alien egg. But, it sure looks like it could be (if such a thing existed!). I think this is what boats use to not get banged up on the dock when tied up to it. The image would make for a good prompt for a writing class though (at least, I imagine that it would).

Can you believe that it is September already? Geez...

Solar Eclipse

It's true that Hawaii was not in the most ideal position to view and experience the epic solar eclipse that just took place on August 21, 2017. However, in 2012, New Mexico was in a good spot to view a partial solar eclipse and these images are from that day. What we don't realize is how an eclipse affects the shadows that are cast-the shadows are little replicas of the eclipse itself. These shadows are referred to as, annular shadows. It's eerie, magical and incredibly fascinating all at the same time. And eerie. Did I mention that already?  ;-)

How You See Things

Perhaps this would be a perfect example of how one's perspective affects how things are viewed. To most people, this is just a pile of trash on the beach. For a few of us, a closer look would reveal the beauty of light and shadow on a smaller piece of beach debris. Yes, a pile of beach debris can be nothing more than that (or, can it?). It doesn't mean that you can't find something there that that is at least somewhat captivating.

I Spy a...

Blinded by the morning sun, I thought I had captured enough of the first image to show you what I spied. Best laid plans, however. I cut off the top part of it as when the sun is really bright, it is hard to see what you're doing! Anyway, I spied Cookie Monster (or Oscar) from Sesame Street fame. @nd image is moi, of course.

So, there you go. That's as good as it gets!

I can't believe it's August 12th already. Geez.

North Coastline Views of Molokai

The north shore coastline of Molokai is not very accessible and evokes a raw wilderness kind of feeling if you do happen to be lucky enough to be in a spot to enjoy the view. A few days ago, I was lucky enough.

A Post

You know, this post has been at this site for a long time but come to think of it, is it really a post or just what's left of a tree that got cut? I couldn't tell you. Nor could I tell you why it is where it is as I don't see the function of why it would've been there in the first place. I suppose it will remain a mystery for me. I won't stop wondering why though.
