Honing the Skills of Observation

When eating, be mindful of eating.
When walking, of walking.
When smiling, of smiling.
~Heart of Buddha

On my walks, the forest is full of eucalyptus trees. Which, for me, makes my walk all the more beautiful as I notice the variations in colors and patterns each leaf that falls to the ground displays. Out of all the people who visit this area on a daily basis, I often wonder how many, if any take the time to notice such details? For each and every leaf is different from the other-no two are alike. In my eyes, each is a small work of brilliant art.

If you stop to take the time to notice the details of life by observation, that act alone gets you closer to learning how to 'just be'. One never fully arrives at that state-it is always a work in progress.

The art of to 'just be' is something that requires a mindfulness and a willingness to commit to a daily practice. It doesn't mean that you beat yourself up every time you don't make it a daily practice. It's just something that you strive for. And, over time, you may find yourself getting a bit better at it.

All you have to do is, 'Just Be'.

Unassuming Beauty

Little ferns on the side bank of a trail. Easy to miss if all you are thinking about is what's ahead. Take the time to stop. Look at what's in front of you. In this moment-just be.

The Best Things In Life Are Not Things~Just Be

A young boy fishing at the Kaunakakai wharf at dusk. It doesn't matter if he catches anything (although I'm sure he hopes he does). It's the act of doing something that he loves and not letting anything else distract him. The soft evening wind blowing against his face. The tide beginning its cycle of rushing back out to sea. Grabbing the very last rays of light long after the sun has dipped over the horizon.

Yes, that's it. That's how you learn how to 'just be'.

The Green Flash-Just Be

Living Presence:

I am abandoned unto you.
You are my strength.
You are my foundation.
I call upon you and am helped.
Fear no longer holds me. You do. And you are love.

~from the book of Centering Prayers

Slow Down and Just Be (the art of)

I think there must be a universal attraction to the various versions of peaceful Buddhas. So many of us are drawn to images and 3D representations of this figure. We all wish we could have that kind of inner peace. Meditation is undermined by the busy, non-stop monkey mind. How does one achieve the so needed empty vessel to experience inner peace? I have no secret trick to offer-except to say that it is a work in progress, it is a daily practice.

The art of to just be is something that requires a mindfulness and a willingness to commit to a daily practice. It doesn't mean that you beat yourself up every time you don't make it a daily practice. It's just something that you strive for. And, over time, you may find yourself getting a bit better at it.

Just Be (the art of)

The detail of moss on a tree trunk. What caught me was the textured layers that it had instead of the usual smooth carpet.
This is what it means to be in the moment-to stop and notice the details of life around you-be it in people's faces or what is at your feet. At that moment in time. Let that moment stand still-that is how it's done. Simple, right?
