Please Don't Eat The Xanthine Snow!!

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our ELEVENTH round with 'Captain Roger' at the helm! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "X".

Albrecht Dürer's wood engraving of a rhinoceros

Xylographer: one who engraves on wood. Albrecht Dürer is an artist that is tops on my list of favorite artists-his work is prolific and impeccable. It doesn't seem possible that one artist was able to produce so much knowing how time consuming some of these techniques are.

I found a great video on You Tube of an artist doing wood engraving with hand tools-he does make it look easy, but don't be fooled!

Xyst: in Greek and Roman architecture, a long, covered portico or open court in which athletes performed their exercises. Such luxury!

Xeme: an Arctic gull. And, coincidentally (or not, depending on your perspective), this image is a woodcut-done by a xylographer!

And, since I totally missed the "W's" last week (and ended up posting "V" twice-wow), here's the 'token' "W":

Wishing you all a very, very

Woodcarving is quite a skill - not as easy as it might appear at first. That rhino is so intricate!
Hope your Xmas was eXcellent, Paula.

Here's one for you: Xyletal...it's in some sugarless gum and is lethal to dogs if they eat it. Yikes!! Really, my Airedale got into some and it was really scary. Anywhoooo...Merry Christmas to you!
