Seven Silly Squids Singing Soft Sonatas

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our ELEVENTH round with 'Captain Roger' at the helm! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "S".

SNELLEN CHART

When I was designing my promotional materials for my solo show that took place last August, I wanted to use the font that you see on eye charts. Lo and behold! There is no such font!! The eye chart that you see when you go in for an eye examination is a special design (from Wikipedia):

The symbols on an acuity chart are formally known as "optotypes". In the case of the traditional Snellen chart, the optotypes have the appearance of block letters, and are intended to be seen and read as letters. They are not, however, letters from any ordinary typographer's font. They have a particular, simple geometry in which:
the thickness of the lines equals the thickness of the white spaces between lines and the thickness of the gap in the letter "C"
The height and width of the optotype (letter) is five times the thickness of the line.

SHAKUDO

(image from Ganoskin Jewelry)

Shakudo, as described in Wikipedia,is: an alloy of gold and copper (typically 4-10% gold, 96-90% copper) which can be treated to form an indigo/black patina resembling lacquer. Unpatinated shakudō visually resembles bronze; the dark color is induced by applying and heating rokushō, a special patination formula.

This ring from the Ganoskin website is such a beautiful example of Shakudo. The Japanese have an incredible understanding of metals and how to work them. It is eveident in the swords that they made for Samurais. And, you see it in other jewelery making techniques such as, Mokume-gane.

SMETHE

(image from Wikipedia: Northern Pintail Duck)

I'll admit it. This word, smethe might be too obsolete for the web! It IS in my unabridged dictionary, but in a Google search for 'smethe', I came up with nothing that matched the dictionary which describes it as a pintail duck (no distinction is made if it is Northern, European, etc.). Even the description in Wikipedia did not use the reference of, 'smethe'.

But, I submit it anyway! You can use it next time you see a pintail duck and feel as though you are speaking in 'code'. Well, you will be!

SEVENTH HEAVEN

From the on line Free Dictionary:

Seventh heaven - a state of extreme happiness
bliss, blissfulness, cloud nine, walking on air
ecstasy, rapture - a state of elated bliss
elation - an exhilarating psychological state of pride and optimism; an absence of depression

And, it is also described as: The farthest of the concentric spheres containing the stars and constituting the dwelling place of God and the angels in the Muslim and kabbalist systems.

Yes, I know. It was also a TV show back in the '70's (?).

smethe - now you're just making up words!
Oh, 7th Heaven was much more recent than you remember: 1996–2007

I remember Seventh Heaven on TV. As Roger says, it wasn't really that long ago. Love that ring and the pintailed duck looks a bit like a loon. "Smethe" sounds like what my daughter says when she doesn't care about anything...lol
