United Unilingual Unitarians Unleashed

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our NINTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "U".

Unterseeboot

(image from militarydiscovery.com)

That's what the German's called them. Unterseeboot=underwater boat. Or, as we know them here in the USA: U boats.  A formidable weapon in WWI and WWII. A far cry from the nuclear submarines we have today. Personally, I could not stand to be underwater like that-I am too claustrophobic and enjoy being able to see the outside and have fresh air.

UMPIRE

(image from the internet-credit was not cited for who the cartoonist was)

Umpire: the person in charge of officiating a baseball game. Instant replay doesn't factor in on decisions here. What the umpire say, goes. Unlike referees in football. Now, the umpires for cricket games is another story in itself. There can be more than 2 umpires for a cricket game. However, I know nothing about cricket games other than what I've just spewed here.

UKASE

Now, you really can't provide an image of what ukase is. Ukase is an edict or proclamation issued by the tzar that has the force of law. And, on the web, most of the images of tzars and tzarinas are of Nicolas and Alexandria. I remember seeing that movie when I was about 18.

UMBRAGE

Can you find the umbrage in this image? I have reason to believe that the most common use of umbrage is in the context of being snubbed socially, rude or offensive. But, it also refers to the shade or shadow cast by a tree. Did you know that? I didn't! In that case then, what we have here is a grand umbrage! Also related to this word is umbra. Umbra is the name of one of the three distinct parts of a shadow (I may have used this word in the past, but it bears repeating). Umbra is a shadow cast by a point source of light. Think of the sun shining on earth as a point source. The shadow cast by the earth is an umbra. Of course, you can demonstrate this with a ball and a flashlight.

And there you have it! U.

Those are some interesting choices. I love U-Boote - although I wouldn't want to serve in one.

I love your "U" choices. I too could not live in a submarine...and I loved your notes on umbrage.

My goodness, I always learn so much from your posts.
I didn't know the umbrage definition either.
Have a great week Paula.

I guess the word "umbrella" comes from umbrage as it casts a shadow or shade on the person carrying it. Great words for our U week!
