Let There be Lumens!!!

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our NINTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "L".

Large Lens

A lens from a theatrical lighting equipment (it focuses the light beam). To be a bit more precise, it is from a 6" ellipsoidal light that requires two lenses like this. The lens face each other and they straighten out the light beam. If you're like me, you are sitting there wondering, "how is it that the light beam needs to be straightened"? Well, this is the answer I got-the bulb puts out lights rays in all directions and the lenses focus the light into a beam-much like how the old SLR cameras did (I don't know if the digital SLR's do the same). So, there you have it-the low down on this really large lens!

I almost forgot to mention to take note of how the lens picked and reflected all the artwork on my wall. That came as a surprise to me when I photographed the lens!

Lovely Lotus Seed Head

I admit to having a fascination with lotus seed heads. The flower itself is unusual and beautiful, but the seed head is like the everlasting crowing glory to the flower. When you watch a lotus bud rise from the water (imagine a time lapse film) and transform itself into this beautiful flower and then to this seed head, it is easy to see why it has become a symbol for birth, transformation and enlightenment.

LONELY LEAF

Lonely, but not forgotten!

What about the lumens? Thought you'd never ask. I also write  blog material for an internet lighting company, Total Lighting Supply. There is only a shortage of time to do the writing as opposed to not having enough things to write about. I learn as I go and I ask lots of questions. I also have the perspective of most consumers. Many of us have been conditioned to think of the brightness of a bulb to be defined by wattage. However, wattage is a measurement of energy consumed, not a definition of light output. Lumens is one of several ways to measure light output. You can find out more about this in one of the more recent articles I wrote, "LED, Incandescents, CFL's. Oh, No! (or Watt's Up?). (see-LED could easily have been another ABC word-maybe next time). Let me know if it shed some light for you on the subject matter (oh, sorry...sometimes it is hard to avoid puns be they bad or good!). And, if you have lighting questions you'd like to see me tackle in a future article, let me know! It might be fun and if I use the question/topic in an article (on the other site, not this one), I will credit you for the questions and also link back to your blog. Unless, of course, you're too shy or would rather be 'under the radar'...

Always a pleasure to visit your blog Paula.
Out of the mud rises the lotus.
Many, many years ago my favorite DJ use to use the lotus quote as his signature saying every morning.
I can see it rising to new beginnings.
Great explainations about the lumens and lens.

Totally fascinating. I love the way your artwork spills to the lens. The lotus is one of my favorites - it reminds me of Georgia O'Keefe. :) A single leaf is far more fun than several bushels full. I'll check out your lumens watts and leds. There's much to learn!

Oh my gosh...this was an incredible read. And what artistic talents...it shows through with your compositions in writing AND photography. The seed pods are always something that works great in crafting and anything of Autumn art. Well done.

Cooler Days Ahead
