Clever, Cunning, Cute, Cagey, Canny, Crafty Codex

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our EIGHTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter. is, "C"

C is for codex. Codex is the book form as we know it today. Ages and ages ago, the written word was done on scrolls. Somewhere along the way, the Romans came up with an adaptation to the wooden tablets, and over the course of a few centuries, the scroll was replaced by the codex. I've linked the word to Wikipedia so that you can get the more detailed history of the codex.

These are some books that I've made recently. Mixed media. About 4" x 3".  I've taken a few bookmaking classes in the past and I'm never any good at them because they get a bit complicated with a lot of cutting and measuring and requiring far more exactitude than I can ever provide. But these little sweeties, I love to do. They don't seem to require as much exactitude as other books do and they are totally addicting to make! My dear friend, Leighanna taught me how and I really love making them. She'll be teaching classes on how to make these at various art venues across the country, so check out her teaching schedule. Her boy friend, Tom Ashman makes another kind of book called a glass journal which is stunning. You can learn how to make the glass journal in one of his workshops. I need to learn how to make that one someday soon.

I have done a lot of studying about Bible translating. The oldest manuscripts are referred to as codex.

These are rather fab. Someone, very kind and very patient, once tried to teach me how to make books: it wasn't him it was me, exactitude is right!

Beautiful. I haven't paid attention to handmade books for a while. This is a lovely reintroduction.

That is absolutely fascinating! I wish I could take a course, Paula. I don't like doing "crafts," but this is captivating!
