I took this whilst I was at the Petrified Forest National Park in October.
Donna and I were out for a hike looking for what we hoped, were huge panels of petrogylphs. We did find some but, they weren't the large panels we had hoped for and to get up close to them involved climbing up an escarpment of large boulders. Instead, we got as close as we safely could, and sat down to enjoy them. Before I headed back down the rocky terrain, I noticed this little dead plant casting a shadow on a rock wall. I had to climb a little bit further up to get a shot of this and then realized what really was the backdrop for it.
It was this:
It took my breath away. And no, those are not petrogylphs on the top of this rock (or, I guess it really is a boulder). It's just the natural patina that it takes on after centuries of wind and rain.
I do find vignettes like this to be simply irresistible!
Every week, a group of us from around the world post our shadow shots over at Hey Harriet. Entertain your muse and be amused by stopping by to see what others have posted! You can view all of my 2009 Shadow Shot Sunday images on my Flickr account. Click here and then select the "Shadow Shot" set.

I like the square cut red stone. The way they are naturally arranged, they seem like dominoes that ar starting to topple. Nice NM scenes, and that branch rising from the earth looks almost like antlers. Both are wonderful captures!
i agree!!!! what an awesome shot paula!!! everything about your two photos are perfect!! love,LOVE,love them.
Add me to the list! I LOVE them both, too! What great composition and colors! Superb! Hope you have a great weekend, Paula! Enjoy!

Too bad you didn't find the petroglyph panels, Paula, but that rock on the left, in the second picture, does look like it has a petroglyph on top of it. Instead it is nature's rock painting. Lovely.

Me too!! Fabulous photos!!
Very nice! The bare twig shot is my fave. Happy SSS to you.
I like the patina of the weather worn rocks. Also, your idea of making a book from your blog posts is one I am considering. Is it very expensive to do?
Simply stunning, I love the desert, it's quiet wind carved beauty leaves me breathless, some day I'll return to visit...great shots, it looks so warm!
What great shots. I too love them both.
That is a beautiful photo. The stones look so massive and ancient.
For Shirley:
I'm not sure how to contact you, but having your blog printed (the cost) depends on how much you want printed. I printed all of 2009 which has a lot of postings, and that was about 80 dollars. Which, for me was worth it since it gave my husband a good chance to see what I've done since he gets burned out at the computer at work. My Damien blog was $30 because it wasn't as extensive as my regular one. And if you don't print the comments, that should cut down on space.
beautiful natural shadow shot - what scenic rocks..
love your shots they are stunning. Must be a fascinating place. Thank you for visiting my site as well and leaving a comment.
