Kicking up Knotty Kaleidoscopes

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our seventh round-some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "K".

KAI

In the Hawaiian language, 'kai' means the sea or beach. All the vowels in the Hawaiian language are pronounced the same as they are in Spanish. In case you are wondering how to pronounce 'kai'.
You know how you're supposed to have a place to go to in your mind that relaxes you? I mean, when you are using imagery familiar to yourself to induce a state of relaxation? That  'happy place'? This is my 'happy place'. It is a beach on the west end of Molokai. The real name of the beach is Pohaku Mauliuli (falling rock). You can read more about it here. But, the name that we all use (the locals) is, Maki Horse Beach. 'Maki' in Hawaiian, means, dead. If you go to that link, it explains why (don't want to retype all that).

Kalanianiole Hall

This old building has been on Molokai as long as I can remember. It is called, Kalanianiole Hall. On my last trip home, they were in the process of replacing all the old, dead, rotten wood with new wood. Bringing it back to life. The hall is used for parties (usually luaus) and is rented out. I think it accommodates a couple of hundred people at a time or more if you put some tables out on the lawn. Even though Molokai is a small island (population is about 8,000), the parties are HUGE. A wedding reception sometimes has several seatings. To put things in perspective for you, a party of just 250 people is considered to be a small, intimate party! Everyone has to stagger the graduation parties so that each one can be attended. Graduation takes place in early June and parties extend into July so that everyone can go to everyone else's party. Anyway, a lot a good food has been eaten by yours truly at many a party attended here at Kalanianiole Hall.

KNOT

Feeling all tied up? Stomach in a knot? He, he...

This lovely (and huge) knot belongs to the rope that holds the tire swing on our tree in our back yard. And, because it is a well tied knot, many a child who visits us has had the pleasure of playing on the old tire swing!

KALAIDESCOPE

Tell me you love kaleidoscopes as much as I do! How can you not? There is something about them that is quite magical and mesmerizing! So the next time you see a kaleidoscope, cram your cell phone camera opening up to it and create yourself a whole bunch of mesmerizing images! You could even use them on your PC's desktop! What a kick!

My Great-Granddaughter's name is Kaia, they were going to name her Kai, but, decided to add the 'a' at the end. I now know what it means. My Granddaughter had told me it was an Hawaiian name, but she wasn't sure of the meaning. Kaia is now 1 year old.

I enjoyed your K post today, great choice of K words.

Fascinating post. I've been applying Spanish pronunciation to Hawaiian words for years because English pronunciation didn't seem to work.
I love your photos!

Lots of pretty K things and places here.
My little grandson in LA is named Kai and he loves the water.

I wrote you an explanation of the church name that I found, but if you find another one, let me know. It does sound funny, eh?

The kaleidoscopes are definitely a kick. Love all the pictures and explaining how to pronounce the words. Oh how I would love to go to Molokai.

It's a reference to the Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, from Sgt Pepper.

Wow! What fun these were! Each one. I'd never thought of photographing a kaleidscope view, but you can bet I'm going to try that in about 2 minutes. Excellent, as always!

You had not only colours in abundance in the kaleidoscope, but elsewhere too. I would have loved to bring my camera to that beach at sunset.

I am fortunate to say I've seen the island of Kauai! Stunning just doesn't seem to describe it. Love the close up of the knot, and I've always toyed with the idea of shooting one of my kaleidoscopes through the eye hole. Maybe next time around!

Thanks for the lessons. The visit to the beach was great. We have beaches we like here too, beaches on lakes. No tide to speak of, but many places where small creeks flow into the lake.
That hall reminds memof a Grange Hall, or what we call a section house or Township Hall. Usually, at the places I mention, the residents of the area can use the hall for a very small fee and they clean up after themselves.
Nice sturdy knot, looks like it can hold me!
I just mentioned kaleidoscopes in my post today. I like them, andf as you say, they are intrigueing.
Enjoy the Painted Desert. Sounds like it will be a great experience.

Peace.
