This is the Wood of the Cross...

A befitting Shadow for a befitting occasion...

I took this image on recent trip up to Santa Fe-this is in the Cathedral in Santa Fe.

It's a rather startling image of a crucifix even for one who has been a Catholic all of their life. But, it's a wonderful example of artistic interpretation whether or not you agree with the artist's choice. Well, you know, like those ripped abs! There. I said it. I wonder why the artist decided to do that? I also suspect that this 'likeness' of Christ is made of paper mache.

No matter. A good shadow was there for my taking. And, I saved this shot just for today's post (because it's Easter Sunday). If I had an image of an empty tomb with a shadow, I most certainly would've used that image instead, rest assured!

Other than a compelling image and a neat shadow, there is also a bit of controversy over the wood of the cross. The internet is full of lots of discussion on this. I had no idea.

Every week, a group of us from around the world post our shadow shots over at Hey Harriet. Entertain your muse and be amused by stopping by to see what others have posted!

You can view all of my 2009 Shadow Shot Sunday images on my Flickr account. Click here and then select the "Shadow Shot" set.

The cloth frames the crucifix in a nice way - the vertical motif of the cloth accents the height of the cross. Indeed, the Lord sits up high, his death sad, the resurrection a sign of great love. Jesus the man was very strong, he endured so much on the way to the crucifixion - the muscles attest to a hard life on this earth. I think this is beautiful, the cross attains foe us life everlasting. Happy Easter!

His extremely skinny arms really bother me. They seem so incongruous with the rest of his body.

Fascinating portrait, there are so many renditions of this statue, all with their own special touches...I like this one!

Have a wonderful Sunday holiday!!!

Happy Easter Paula!
Love your shot for today. Yes, the abs are different - and I noticed the hair - I've never seen hair like that on a crucifix either (though I think it's a nice touch!)
Enjoy your weekend!

Here in Brisbane our cathedral has a crucifix which causes a lot of comment as well - I love it while my husband decidedly doesn't, and that's about how it sits with the community as a whole. They had record crowds at the Good Friday ceremonies - mainly young people. It took us 30 minutes to get out of the car park, but that was fine. Have a very happy Easter.

A wonderfully appropriate shadow shot for this weekend! I'm not sure how I feel about it but you photographed it beautifully! Hope you and your family have a happy Easter :)

Paula thanks for the great Shadow Shot. Liked your comment about the empty tomb---there's nothing there as He is risen!! Happy SSS and Easter too.

I'm a Shadow Shot Shooter myself and found your blog via Hey Harriet. I don't get to all of them, but I randomly pick a few out each week.
As far as shadows go, this is a great catch. I like the hard edged well defined shadows on this photo.
The subject matter, well, it's a free country so they say. Everyone has their own thoughts I'm sure.
Yes, the abs!

Peace.
