Dancing With Saints and Devils

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. We are now in our sixth round-some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "D".

DENDROBIUM

I'll say it again, dendrobium. I love the way this word sounds! I love what it is too. One of the largest genus of orchids. Over 1200 species found in a wide range of habitats world wide. "Dendrobium" is Greek for dendron (tree) and bios (life), translating roughly to "one who lives in trees". Hawaii has its fair share of species in the wild, domestically and commercially.

I love the plants and I like the word. Really. You can say it a whole bunch of times and it's quite rhythmical. Cue the song from "The Music Man" movie about Marian the librarian and substitute Marian's name for dendrobium throughout the song. Yah, I know, the syllables don't quite match up. Amusing, nonetheless...

DAMIEN (St. Damien)

Hey, we're on the "D's"! I'm from Molokai. The man just got canonized. I just have to have him here! But, if you haven't seen the art and the site I created in honor of this event, you can do so here.

DEVIL'S CLAW

I may have posted Devil's Claw before, but it was most likely in the dried seed pod state. This is what it looks like before it gets to that devilish state of a dried seed pod. Very soft and fuzzy. Be sure to check out the link for this one. Really interesting medicinal uses-you've probably seen it in the supplement section of a good natural foods type grocery store or herb store.

DANCER

Me. A long time ago. Dress rehearsal for Orpheus in the Underworld. I really loved performing this one. The music is great, choreography great and the best pas de deux partner anyone could ask for-John Heglin. I have no idea where he is these days as that was in San Diego and I'm in New Mexico now. This was taken sometime around 1980 at the El Cajon Performing Arts Center in California.

A blast from the past.

All very exciting - what fun it must have been to be a stage star! The dendrobium is spectacular and I'm glad you posted the Devil's Claw. I don't think I've seen it before. I heard about Damien recently, it seems. I'll go see your site. Nice D post!

Great! I also like the word "Dendrobium", and the dancer is beautiful. Damien is well known in my country too, even to me as a protestant. He was a great man.

Your parallel worlds make for fascinating topics and photos. The flower is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing the photo of Fr. Damien...been to Molokai, an impressive place with a history both sad and uplifting. Come visit me at my temporary vacation spot, Santa Fe! Now I have to find a map to see where your NM abode is located.
