This is taken from the patio of my brother's home which is right below Tripler Hospital. It was the second day there for me and the vog has been ever present. Vog, you say? What is vog? Volcanic smog. That's what it is. This time of year, the earth is shifted on it's axis which affects the trade winds here in Hawaii and the direction in which the winds occur. The trade winds are absent often because of the axial shift. In sailor's terminology, when there is no wind, it is called, the doldrums. This vog is courtesy of Kilauea eruption that seems to be on a 24/7/365 shift. I arrived Wednesday and today is Sunday. The vog got really thick yesterday and it has not let up. I suppose it's good I'm headed to Molokai tomorrow as it is not quite as thick there.
As I type this, I am listening to my younger brother, Tim play slack key guitar. On weekends, he tries to get in an hour each day of slack key and classical guitar. He is self-taught and always had a God given talent for music.
And, we started off the day visiting Mom before heading off to church. She is at Punchbowl Memorial Cemetery.
I took this shot yesterday morning. You can barely see the Honolulu skyline as the vog is pretty thick.
From the balcony of church, The Mystic Rose Chapel, on Chamanaide campus which boasts a picture perfect view of Diamond Head. If only the vog weren't so thick! Oh, well, the hazards of island life...
