I guess it just wasn't meant to be...
I had tried for a week or two before coming over here to secure a sponsor to go down to Kalaupapa. I finally got one yesterday and spent the night preparing for the long hike up and down the nearly 8 mile (total) trail. It rained all night. I got up early and headed up to the trail and sat in the truck watching the rain come down. The decision to bail out wasn't easy, but one has to exercise common sense in regards to that hike. I had stepped out of the truck to talk to someone who was headed down there as he worked there. He advised against it. In that 3-5 minutes talking to him, I was drenched. So, reluctantly, I canceled it.
No matter. I t gave me a chance to do other things, but I did return up to the top of the trail later in the day and was blessed by this wonderful sight as the sun broke through the sky. Ironwood pine needles wet with rain. Like millions of orbs of fairy light. Magical...
