Kilauea Caldera

From the top of the mountain is the Kilauea Crater. Usually, you can drive around the rim of this crater, but due to the recent volcanic activity, the road is closed off. I got excited just seeing this. Little did I know that it was just a small warm up for the next day's adventure!

Alright, so this is a photo of a photo that was in the visitor's center (SOL=snickering out loud).

Cool rendition of the Big Island...I don't know if it helps you the viewer at all in getting a perspective of the island and the crater. Try this link here for more comprehensive information about the crater, the history of eruptions and the latest, on-going eruption.

And, if you look closely at this map, you'll see where we drove to get an up close and personal view of the current lava flow. Look in the very bottom of the right hand corner of this map where you see the words, "Kalapana". That is where we drove to the very next day.
