Shadow Lace

One sunny, warm, winter afternoon while strolling through Old Town in Albuquerque, I see LACE on the ground! Nothing that can be worn, but the intricate patterns are certainly something to behold!

Kittens Kicking a Kilogram of Knockwurst

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our TENTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "K".

KALUA PIG

 K. A LOT of Hawaiian words begin with the letter, "K". Such as the word, 'kalua' (pronounced just like the coffee liqueur, Kahlua). It is an underground cooking method that the ancient Hawaiians used to cook their food, such as, pig (called, pua'a in Hawaiian and pigs were easy to transport across the Pacific ocean in canoes when the Hawaiians migrated to the Hawaiian islands). Kalua pig (nope, we don't say, 'kalua pork') is moist, tender, smoky and melts in your mouth. When it is cooked in the underground oven, it is the whole hog, oops. I mean, pig. When they take it out, it is falling apart, it is so tender. I do a crock pot version using a less fatty cut of pork. The pork goes in to the crock pot with some water, liquid smoke, Hawaiian salt, pepper. and a wee bit of garlic and onion powder. Just a wee bit. Cook it on high for about 5 hours or until fork tender. Absolutely delicious! Good kau kau (pronounced cow cow) which, in Hawaiian, means food or a meal.

KEIKIS

(Kaleo aka Tomas and his sister, Isa circa 2007)

Keiki in Hawaiian means, children. These two have grown considerably since this was taken. They are my nephew and niece, Kaleo and Isa Jack. They live in Hilo, Hawaii and not very far from the volcano, Kilauea.

(Kilauea)

KEYSTONE

Keystone. From Wikipedia: "A keystone is the wedge-shaped stone piece at the apex of a masonry vault or arch, which is the final piece placed during construction and locks all the stones into position, allowing the arch to bear weight.[1] This makes a keystone very important structurally."

KNEEHOLE DESK

As the name implies, a kneehole desk is any desk with a hole in the center for the knees. Desks and the history of their functional elements that changed over the centuries is quite interesting. You can read more about at Wikipedia.

So, there you have it ladies and gentlemen-a heaping serving of the letter, "K"!

And, no kittens or knockwurst were harmed the the making of this post.

The Element of Surprise

You see it, don't you? That look of surprise in this shadow face? That, "Oh, no, Mr. Bill!" kind of look.

Perhaps you didn't at first, but now that I've mentioned it, it is hard to miss. It's one of those 'don't look now' kinds of things.

And, someone please tell me what this belongs to. I have no idea. It is small. It might be plastic. I'm think a plastic grill to a toy car or truck?
These images are amongst the many toys and children's stuff that I posted a few weeks back (the abandoned house). Actually, the shadow on this one makes me think of a finch's head and beak (profile).

I'll admit it. I do 'see' things! Not embarrassed to admit it either. Between abandoned sites like this one and the incredible geology of this state, it is easy to 'see' things!

What things have you 'seen' lurking in the shadows today?

Jumping Jimmy and Jamming Judy

JACKET

Not a very fashionable jacket, is it? I hope that neither you or I will ever need this. The dictionary does have some pretty funky images, you have to admit. This one is no exception!

JEWELRY

A jewelry set I made for myself. I had high hopes years ago that I would sell the jewelry I made (although I don't really 'make it' but create compositions). No matter. I like to wear jewelry and being able to make your own is pretty darned empowering! And, it makes for a good gift to friends from time to time.

JIMMY BEGS

Alright. Jimmy isn't jumping. He's begging. Jimmy is the name of one of my friend's dog. He is, without a doubt, the center of the Universe for her! You can see why-he is pretty cute and he loves to show off how good he is at 'begging'!

JULY 4th BICYCLE PARADE

Rio Rancho is lucky to have a great Parks and Recreation Director (Jay Hart) in our city. Not long after he came on board, he thought it would be great to make our 4th of July parade fun for he kids too and added a bicycle decorating contest. All the contestants get to ride their bikes in the parade after they have been judged. It's a hoot to watch them come down the street en mass.

Why Don't You Write Me?

(taken at the Rio Rancho USPS)

While leaving the post office one afternoon, I had to stop and get out my cell phone to capture these tiles 'imprisoned' by the window shadow. I think my stopping to photograph the ground in the post office confused the lady in front of me who had stopped to hold the door open for me (and I wondered if I should've bothered to explain to her that I was stopping to photograph this really cool shadow?).

I am a texture and pattern 'hound' so to speak (which is why I think I love shadows so much since they often throw patterns). This image is either real wood or concrete made to look like it-now I don't remember! All I know is that I took this somewhere near the sculpture garden at the Albuquerque Museum.

And to all you out there that celebrate St. Patrick's Day: Happy St. Patrick's Day! Go ahead, be green!  ; )

Oh-wait! before you go, my friend had posted an image that I thought was the coolest shadow shot, so please check out Robert Redus' site to see what I'm talking about.

Isabel's Iambic Pantameter Ignites Imaginations

IONIC ORDER

Ionic order: Wikipedia (dictionaries, art  and architecture textbooks) describe this as "one of the three orders or organizational systems of classical architecture, the other two canonic orders being the Doric and the Corinthian".

It is amazing how Greek and Roman architecture has carried through for so many centuries long after these civilizations disappeared.

 INDIAN MARKET

The Santa Fe Indian Market is an annual event. The image above is of contestants waiting to go on stage for a costume competition (in the sense of traditional wear). This year's event will be on Aug. 18-19 and their website describes the event as:

"The Santa Fe Indian Market is a 91-year-old Native art market. It is the largest and most prestigious Native arts market in the world and the largest cultural event in the southwest. The yearly event is held during the third weekend of August. Over 1,100 Native artists from the U.S. and Canada sell their artwork. The Indian Market attracts 100,000 visitors to Santa Fe from all over the world. Buyers, collectors and gallery owners come to Indian Market to take advantage of the opportunity to buy directly from the artists. For many visitors, this is a rare opportunity to meet the artists and learn about contemporary Indian arts and cultures. Quality and authenticity are the hallmarks of the Santa Fe Indian Market."

ICICLE

Icicles. Makes me cold just thinking about them! Yet, they are beautiful, aren't they? Even when they look (and might be) treacherous. Dripping water freezing mid air.

 (curvy icicle image from Wikipedia)

And, this is what happens when there is enough of a wind present while it is freezing in mid air!

INTESTINES

Eeeewww!! I'm sure many of you are retracting as you read the word, intestines! Hey-but we can't do without them, can we? At least I posted a tamed down image from the dictionary! If you want to see the real deal, you'll have to watch Dr. Oz. or take an Anatomy and Physiology course.

A SHADOW TANGO

SHADOWS
(a poem by Joseph King)

The light is dim
the feeling is dark
the shadow protects me
it saves me from light
when i feel all alone
with no place to go
the shadow is there
it helps me find my way home
when the world has deserted me
when no one seems to care
i can always count on my shadow
i know it will be there

Shadows dancing across a boulder cloaked in a ocher colored lichen.

Headlining Humming Humpbacks Hailing from Hawaii

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our TENTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "H".

HUMPBACKS HUMMING

Humpbacks sing. Humpbacks hum. Humpbacks migrate to Hawaii every year. And, while I was growing up on Molokai, I was able to watch their journey through the Molokai channel from the shoreline as they were only a 1/4 mile off on their way to Maui . What would be even more exciting is when there is a mother and her calf traveling together. The website that this image is from is a very extensive website and their tours take place in the Dominican Republic. Maybe, even do a soft encounter and swim with them! If you ever plan a visit out that way, be sure to include their tour in your trip. I haven't done the tour, but I can see the love and respect they have for the Humpback whales. They also have a whole gallery of images, videos and sound tracks. The website is called, Conscious Breath Adventures. I'm putting this one on my list for my 60th birthday in a couple of years. You can also listen to them sing here.

HAWAII

Humpbacks do a lot of their humming in Hawaii, my birthplace and homeland. See the skinny, long island in the middle? That's Molokai and where I hail from. Pretty far away from just about anything. I always laugh when folks here talk about being isolated in a small, rural community in New Mexico. At least they can get in a car and drive to somewhere else!

HOT (DIGGITY) DOG!!!

Hot dogs. What a strange food concoction! And yet, I find myself hungry for them from time to time (as of late, for sure). Lots of websites with the history of the hot dog, but I found this one to have the most obscure information (and you all know how I love the obscure!).

HEADLIGHTS
(on a '49 Chevy pick up truck)

Headlights. What a bright idea (sorry)! Driving at night would be oh so impossible without them. Talk about a mundane object that is not given much thought, huh?

And now, for a bit of the obscure:

HIPPOGRIFF

(image from Wikipedia: llustration by Gustave Doré for Orlando furioso)

Hippogriff. Wow. Who'd a thought! A mythical or legendary creature that is the offspring of a mare and a griffin. I gotta get me one! Although, this creature is perhaps not so obscure with the advent of the Harry Potter series (remember, Buckbeak?). Well, if you didn't know, now you do know!

The Albuquerque Weekly Alibi

Imagine having to come up with an alibi every week!

However, in this case, it's not such a bad thing! The Weekly Alibi is a free publication that is community based. This shot was taken right outside the window (if that's what it should be called-it's glass block) of their office. The shadow is cast from a stylized 'awning'.

And, a lovely wooden bridge located in the Botanical Garden in Albuquerque. It was a perfect day when I went-sunny, no wind, and somewhat warm! Not bad for being in the dead of winter when this shot was taken.

I just realized as I was scheduling this post to be published on Sat., March 3rd, that it will be Girl's Day. It is also known as the Japanese Doll Festival. My niece is now in Japan teaching English, so I am hoping she posts images of Girl's Day in Japan on her blog. I hope you have a happy girl's day! Unless, of course, you're not a girl.
