Uppity Ubbenites Uncover Useless Utensils

ABC Wednesday
is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our ELEVENTH round with 'Captain Roger' at the helm! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "U".

UTRICLE

(image from the Mayo Clinic site-my 'go to' site when I need medical info)

From Wikipedia: "The utricle, or utriculus, along with the saccule is one of the two otolith organs located in the vertebrate inner ear. The utricle and the saccule are parts of the balancing apparatus (membraneous labyrinth) located within the vestibule of the bony labyrinth (small oval chamber).[1] These use small stones and a viscous fluid to stimulate hair cells to detect motion and orientation."

It is this movement of those hair cells in that area that is responsible for your motion sickness. Or, perhaps for you, it is the lack thereof (lucky you).

URANOPLASTY

Uranoplasty is a surgical operation to correct a defect of the palate or roof of the mouth. I won't creep you all out with an image of this.

UBIETY

Ubiety: The quality or state of being in a place; local relation; position or location; whereness.
Not sure if I could use this effectively in a sentence. Any takers on this challenge?

ULLAGE

(image from the Daily Omnivore)

Ullage-now this is a fun word, isn't it? It's that unfilled space in a bottle or a container (and the container can be as large as a semi truck or a grain ship).

And there you have it, this weeks line up of useless words! Although I do like ullage. Who would've thought that an empty space in a bottle or container would  have such a specific word for it?

The feeling I get from using "ubiety" in a sentence is not as challenging as the warm feeling of ubiety I get when I'm in one of two of my favorite countries...either México or Cuba!

Oh I loved your "U" words!!! I learn so much each time I come...I just wished I'd remember them more.

ullage - nope, didn't see that one coming.

You're not the first one to want to see ubiety used in a sentence.

I passed by the ullage when I was looking for 'u' words. I like your image, so apt, for it. Glad you didn't show the image for the surgery.

Paula, I think my daughter Riley would LOVE the picture you created to go with "ubiety," so I'll send her here! She is also a word buff. Used to keep a dictionary in the bathroom! Thanks, hon. Amy
