Shadow Lovers: Take Note!

this is perhaps my favorite shadow image that I've taken this year...

Flash back to the last day in September. Weather is perfect-not too hot, not too cold. We had a business meeting at our house and decided to have it outside in our patio since serenity reigned supreme there. There reaches a  point in time as the day shifts from afternoon to evening where the sunlight is at eye level and for some brief moments in time, it becomes a 'ducking' game to keep the sun out of your eyes. But, it also makes for unusually exaggerated shadows. I looked down at my notebook and saw the most glorious image! Without offering any explanation as to what I was doing, out comes the ever handy cell phone and I take a picture of what I'm sure the others thought was just my notebook.
Ha!

I'm sure you all know that if the ones around you don't share your passion for being a shadow sleuth, there's no point in offering explanations. As for my husband, it is 'normal' behavior for me. The woman behind the camera. A snippet of my statement on my website states,

It is this sense of acuity that I fully seek and embrace and am
always in search of in many of my images.

It’s about seeing beauty, transcendence and mystery in everyday things.

My son grew up with this woman behind the camera. When he was younger, he would pose for me and not run away from the camera. When he hit his pre-teen years and beyond, it became, 'oh, mom' or not even that, but just that look. I happens to many of us parents-the children reach a point where they no longer want that level of 'paparazzi' in their life.

This Saturday, the 27th of Oct., our son turns 21 years old. It is so hard to believe that he has reached that milestone. It still seems like yesterday when my husband and my son filled the house with their rough housing and shenanigans. We are both very pleased and proud of what our son has grown up to be. I spent the last few days compiling a short video to commemorate his 21st birthday with. Yes, it's on You Tube for public viewing. And, I will share it with you all here:

"Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see." (Martin Luther King)

Every week, a group of us from around the world post our shadow shots over at Shadow Shot Sunday 2. Entertain your muse and be amused by stopping by to see what others have posted! You can view all of my 2011 Shadow Shot Sunday images on my Flickr account.

It doesn't seem that it goes in a flash, but as ours are 23 and 21, and we have the pictures to prove it - we realize it is almost in a second. What a loving slideshow, the years are passing and a fine young man he is - guided by his parents knows about values and right and wrong. A true gentleman!

The spiral bound book has an amazing shadow, full of thoughts in its pages. The pen is truly mighty!

Being a teacher and having seen many spiral bounds in my day, this would definitely be my favorite shadow shot of all time. It is wonderful. I tell you, once we start keeping our eyes open to shadows we can find the most wonderful one in the most unusual places. This is a grad shot. genie

Love your shot Paula...not only are the spirals mesmerizing...but we love the shadows on the paper as well...a nice muddled background for those sharp loop-de-loops!
Also loved John's video you put together...so sweet to watch him grow up before our eyes! Happy 21st to John :)

How wonderful Paula! I wished we had done this for our children.Your son is a handsome young man and he has loving parents!
Thanks for your visit and comment. You asked for the pronunciation of Over ijssel,. Over = over, same as in English, same meaning too. IJssel is de name of the river IJssel. Pronounced like "I sell". Overijssel means the other side of the IJssel.

What a beautiful labor of love that video is. I'm sure your son will treasure that forever.

Great shadow, too! I would never have guest a simple notebook could make for such a dramatic photo.

I liked how you described the time of day where shadows seem over exuberant!! And I also see why your photo is a favorite of yours...so artistically done.

Happy Birthday John!
Your dad said you want to do 'everything' - that's good plan! You can always change the direction if necessary.

Paula, I really like the video. And your hubby's words...ah, men should speak like this more!
Well done Paula! Great shadows too :)
