Headlining Humming Humpbacks Hailing from Hawaii

ABC Wednesday is a word meme with participants from around the world. This fabulous meme was created and hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt who hails from Great Britain. Over time, others have joined in to help host this wonderful and informative meme. We are now in our TENTH round! Some of the participants have been with this from the very first round; others have joined in along the way. Each week we are taken across the globe to see the varied and exciting contributions people have taken the time to discover and capture. We start with the letter, "A" and each week we post something in regards to the next letter of the alphabet. This week's letter is, "H".

HUMPBACKS HUMMING

Humpbacks sing. Humpbacks hum. Humpbacks migrate to Hawaii every year. And, while I was growing up on Molokai, I was able to watch their journey through the Molokai channel from the shoreline as they were only a 1/4 mile off on their way to Maui . What would be even more exciting is when there is a mother and her calf traveling together. The website that this image is from is a very extensive website and their tours take place in the Dominican Republic. Maybe, even do a soft encounter and swim with them! If you ever plan a visit out that way, be sure to include their tour in your trip. I haven't done the tour, but I can see the love and respect they have for the Humpback whales. They also have a whole gallery of images, videos and sound tracks. The website is called, Conscious Breath Adventures. I'm putting this one on my list for my 60th birthday in a couple of years. You can also listen to them sing here.

HAWAII

Humpbacks do a lot of their humming in Hawaii, my birthplace and homeland. See the skinny, long island in the middle? That's Molokai and where I hail from. Pretty far away from just about anything. I always laugh when folks here talk about being isolated in a small, rural community in New Mexico. At least they can get in a car and drive to somewhere else!

HOT (DIGGITY) DOG!!!

Hot dogs. What a strange food concoction! And yet, I find myself hungry for them from time to time (as of late, for sure). Lots of websites with the history of the hot dog, but I found this one to have the most obscure information (and you all know how I love the obscure!).

HEADLIGHTS
(on a '49 Chevy pick up truck)

Headlights. What a bright idea (sorry)! Driving at night would be oh so impossible without them. Talk about a mundane object that is not given much thought, huh?

And now, for a bit of the obscure:

HIPPOGRIFF

(image from Wikipedia: llustration by Gustave Doré for Orlando furioso)

Hippogriff. Wow. Who'd a thought! A mythical or legendary creature that is the offspring of a mare and a griffin. I gotta get me one! Although, this creature is perhaps not so obscure with the advent of the Harry Potter series (remember, Buckbeak?). Well, if you didn't know, now you do know!

What a great group of words for H week! Have you ever made a hot dog with chopped tomatoes, shredded cheeses, and diced red onion? Use a European weenie and put everything in a sesame seed sausage bun...delicious and a great meal all in one.

Love the humpbacks. They seem almost mysterious.
You have done it again Paula.

I didn't know that about the Dominican Republic tours. My husband took one of his daughters on the company trip to the DR with him this year. If he goes again, I'll go with him. I'd love to see and hear them. I'm not sure if I'd want to swim with them, but I just might!
Great post for H words, Paula.
